At Mumbleberry, we think that slowing down and enjoying the beautiful details in the meal you have prepared or the items you use every day should be a daily practice. It's why we work so hard to source and share incredible, boutique Australian artisans in the food, home and kitchen space.
When we discovered Lucy Jane Ceramics, we were beyond excited to share her stunning, useful and superbly crafted Australian made ceramics with you.
We are so grateful that Lucy has taken some time out of working the clay, to chat with us.
We love what you do. What inspired you to enter the world of Ceramics ?
Honestly, I never really set out to become a potter! I spent years working in media, which involved lots of deadlines, screens and everything happening at 100 miles an hour. I started pottery as a way to slow things down, use my hands and be creative in a different way. I quickly became a little obsessed with it. I loved that it forced me to be present and pay attention, and that you simply can't rush the process. Somewhere along the way, the hobby turned into Lucy Jane Ceramics, and here we are!
What is your favourite thing about what you do?
Probably the fact that I get to make things with my hands. There’s something really satisfying about taking a lump of clay and slowly turning it into something that didn’t exist before... and something that can be useful too. I also love that pottery forces me to slow down. There’s no shortcut around the process (trust me - I've tried!) But maybe the best part is seeing something I’ve made become part of someone else’s everyday life, and knowing that a piece is being used and hopefully loved for years is pretty special.
We are constantly inspired by the gorgeous produce we find. Who or what do you draw inspiration for your range from?
A lot of my inspiration comes from everyday life. I love travel, architecture, interiors and design, but I'm particularly drawn to the small details... textures of objects, light and shadow, or even the ritual of making coffee in the morning. I think the things we use every day deserve a lot of thought, so I tend to design with that in mind. I want my pieces to feel simple and timeless, but also to make those everyday moments feel just a little bit more special.
We are so proud to be supporting Australian artisans like yourself. Who are some of your favourite artisan producers here in Australia and why?
Being based in North East Victoria, I’m lucky to have some pretty amazing producers right on my doorstep. A few favourites are Reed & Co Distillery, The Peaks Cheese and Sixpence Coffee Roasters.
I love what Reed & Co are doing with koji and spirits. They’re constantly experimenting and doing really interesting things with local ingredients, and their food is pretty delicious too! The Peaks Cheese is an easy one because, really, what is a world without cheese?!
And then there’s Sixpence Coffee Roasters, who I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t know how to start the day without. Aside from roasting and serving seriously good coffee, they’ve created such a great sense of community around their space and I love seeing businesses that are not just making great products, but creating a place for people to come together.
We are passionate about giving inspired and delicious gifts with meaning. Do you have a secret gift-giving weapon that always makes you the winner with friends and family that you can share with us?
I’m probably a bit of a wild-card gift giver! I tend to buy things when I come across something that really makes me think of someone, rather than waiting for a birthday or Christmas to roll around and having to go on a hunt. The downside is that I’m absolutely terrible at waiting for the actual gift-giving date, so my friends and family often get presents completely out of sync with the calendar.
I’m not sure it’s much of a secret weapon, or whether it’s occasionally just frustrating, but it definitely keeps people on their toes! And thankfully, it seems to go down pretty well with anyone who likes a surprise.
